When attacking an enemy, you’ll place damage tokens (and other affect tokens, such as disarm) on the sleeve in the area associated with the enemy number you’re attacking. Note that each enemy of a type will have a number on it’s token. The sleeve will show the enemy’s stats for only that level. This is set based on how you insert the stat sheet into the sleeve. You’ll want to start the enemy level at 1 on the stat sheet, but you can adjust it higher or lower depending on the difficulty you choose to play. When setting up the enemies, you’ll take the required number of enemy tokens and stands (based on the number of people playing), enemy stat sheets (with sleeve), and enemy action decks.

As mentioned earlier, the scenario book will tell you how to set up everything from the board (many different modular board pieces come with the game) to the enemies, treasure (note that once you find a treasure, you can never find it again), traps and objects (such as tables, which can be “pushed” or “pulled” assuming you have the specific ability(s) to do so). The next step is to set up your scenario, but only in the first room of the area you’re entering. Then the card (as indicated by the symbol near the option chosen) is either placed at the bottom of the deck, or removed from the game for good. The card will be flipped over and you’ll get reward, get punished, or perhaps nothing happens at all, based on the option chosen. The card will have a description and then two options, A or B. On the way to that mission, as you exit Gloomhaven, draw a road card. Now we’re ready to tackle our first mission.
Check out the image below for a look at some of the items out of the main box. City events take place within Gloomhaven while road events take place, you guessed out, on the road outside of Gloomhaven. Items range from armor to weapons to healing potions to shields.įinally, set up the two event decks (city events and road events), 30 cards per deck (note that there more than 30 cards in each deck, but this is how you begin the game). Items come in different flavors: one time use in a scenario, items that can be refreshed after a long rest (to be discussed later) and some just provide passive stats. The scenario book will also suggest which items your character will begin with, but you can choose any starting items available in the market. These new scenarios will be denoted by a sticker that you’ll place on the campaign map. Upon completion of the first scenario, new ones will be available that you can choose from. Next you’ll want to consult the scenario book on how to set up your scenario, what the objectives are, what rewards you’ll earn if you successfully complete said objectives. Lastly, you’ll receive 20 “attack modifier” cards. You’ll also receive an hp/xp dial (hp starts as designated on your player mat xp starts at 0). Whoever you choose will come with a mini-figurine, player mat, cards and tokens.
